Realme Secures 1st Spot As Top Smartphone Vendor In Ph; Xiaomi Rises To 5th Spot: Canalys

With years and months of Chinese smartphone brands already dominating the Philippine smartphone market, interestingly, a newcomer 2-year old smartphone brand, realme now tops the Philippine smartphone share for the 3rd quarter of 2020 according to Canalys report, a global technology market analyst firm.

As realme's dominance continues to rise with a whopping 521% annual growth and 25% unit share this quarter, it displaces vivo, which previously top-ranked last quarter, now placed 2nd with an unchanged 21% unit share, despite a 103% growth increase.

Samsung and OPPO, on the other hand, are now in 3rd and 4th place consecutively—both brands' individual unit shares have decreased.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi joins the list claiming the 5th spot from Huawei. Contributing to its growth are aggressive marketing efforts like ad placements in TV, digital, inking partnerships with e-commerce websites, and expanding its retail nationwide. To add, the absence of Google Play services on Huawei devices may not be a welcome change for some Filipino consumers, which may be a contributing factor why it's axed from the list.

WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO ITS GROWTH

With the pandemic forcing everyone to connect online, brands that are more aggressive in offering affordable flagship and budget smartphones are those who enjoyed a three-digit annual growth.

We expect the community quarantine restrictions to ease and the Philippine economy to slowly reopen this 3rd quarter. As more physical retail stores open up and with less logistical issues, the demand for consumer electronic products boosted especially smartphones which are most needed for online classes and work-from-home setup.
